The establishment of regional women mediator networks across the globe is a reflection of women’s common aspiration and commitment to participate in and lead peace processes. Women are equal stakeholders in society and can and should have a place at every table where peace is being discussed, negotiated or brokered.

The Norwegian Foreign Minister, Ine Eriksen Søreide delivered a speech to the assembly. Reflecting on the establishment of the alliance, she stated that networking is not an end in itself, but rather a means to an end – namely the appointment of women as mediators and full members of mediation teams. She encouraged more countries and regions to establish networks and join to form a truly global alliance.

Thus far the Nordic Women Mediators, alongside FemWise, Mediterranean Women Mediators Network and Women Mediators Across the Commonwealth are the building blocks of the new alliance which aims to strengthen women’s participation, visibility and influence in peace processes at all levels. NOREF and PRIO are the Norwegian operational partners to the Nordic Women Mediators (NWM), and several NOREF staff are network members. Ida Bakke and Chiara Ayad participated in the event from NOREF's side.
