Arms and democracy: the debate on Syrian militarisation
A strong momentum is building for armed intervention in Syria, either by channelling arms to Syria's rebels or undertaking direct military assaults on the regime. NOREF director Mariano Aguirre and NOREF contributors Robert Matthews and Reinoud Leenders, - the latter copublishing with Steven Haydemann, have been debating whether to arm or not to arm in Syria. Robert Matthews is a consultant on Afghanistan, Pakistan and U.S. foreign policy with NOREF. He holds a PhD in Latin American history from New York University. A former professor of history and politics at New York University, Matthews has been a researcher on U.S. foreign policy with several foreign policy centres in Spain for the past twenty-five years.
Reinoud Leenders is an assistant professor in political science at the University of Amsterdam. He was formerly Middle East analyst for the International Crisis Group based in Beirut (2002-2005). He recently authored Spoils of Truce: Corruption and State-building in Postwar Lebanon? (Cornell University Press, 2012) and edited, with Steven Heydemann, Comparing Authoritarianisms: Reconfiguring Power and Regime Resilience in Syria and Iran (Stanford University Press, 2012).
